The map on the 12th read like a monsoon afternoon, because that's mostly what it was. Twenty-nine reports, and the bulk of them were heat-swollen wind gusts out of the desert Southwest — Arizona alone put up ten, all blowouts around Tucson and the high country north of Phoenix, with Utah adding a few more up around Cedar City.

The hardest wind, though, came off the northern High Plains. Montana logged seven reports and the day's top gust — 77 mph at Grass Range, out in the ranch country east of Lewistown. That's a dry microburst that flattens a hay shed and peels ridge cap without a stone of hail to go with it.

For roofs, the day's real teeth were two small pockets a thousand miles apart. Up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, two 1.75-inch stones fell — one at Herman, southeast of the Keweenaw, the other out on Isle Royale where nobody lives. Down in the Texas Panhandle, the day's lone tornado touched near Lake Tanglewood just south of Amarillo, with an inch of hail in town and a 66 mph gust up at Washburn.

If you're around Herman or anywhere the U.P. caught that cell, 1.75-inch ice is past the cosmetic line — it bruises mats and shakes granules loose whether or not the shingle looks torn from the driveway. That's country where a hailed-on roof can sit unlooked-at for months; a stone that size earns a real walk while it's still obvious what put the dents there.

For crews, there's no corridor to work — it's a scattered day. The only concentrated hail is that Herman pocket in the U.P., and everything else is one-off desert wind from Arizona to Utah. Where the season's big ice keeps stacking stays on the Top States for Hail board. The full state-by-state list is below — find your town in it and see whether the 12th sent anything across your roof.
