The 20th was really two storms wearing one date. Up in the Upper Peninsula, a cell parked over Michigan and dropped a 3.25-inch stone on Rock, southwest of Marquette — the fattest hail anybody's logged in more than a week, and a genuine roof-wrecker of a size.

Six hundred miles south, Iowa got the other half: a wind line that ran 35 reports deep and peaked at 80 mph near Centerville, down by the Missouri border. Iowa still coughed up its own ice too — a 2.75-inch stone at Story City, north of Ames — but the bulk of the state's damage was blown, not thrown.

Between them, Wisconsin did the strange work: only six reports, but four of them tornadoes, including one near Spread Eagle right up on the Michigan line. Small, quick spin-ups, the kind that flatten a corn row and peel a pole barn and are gone before the siren finishes.

Three-plus inches of ice is a different animal than the inch-and-change we've been logging most of the month. That's not bruised shingles — that's cracked mats, split older comp, dented gutters and hoods and AC fins. And here's the tell most folks miss on a stone that big: check the soft metal first. If the fins on your outdoor AC unit are dimpled, or the top of your gutter run is pocked, the roof over your head caught the same hits — shingles just hide it better than aluminum does.

For crews, the cleanest work is that Upper Michigan corridor around Rock and Hermansville — tight, big stones, and a stretch of country that doesn't see a chaser every other week. Iowa's wind is a longer, thinner drag to canvass, and the Wisconsin tornado damage is a door-at-a-time hunt. The season's running hail leaders sit on the Top States for Hail board.
