Nebraska took 22 of the day's 42 reports on the 30th, and nearly all of them came out of the Sandhills. An 80 mph gust hit Brownlee, 74 at Callaway, and 70s at Stapleton, Ainsworth, and Lexington — a line grinding southeast across ranch country through the afternoon.

Stapleton also caught the day's biggest hail, a 1.5-inch stone, and a tornado touched down at Mullen. South Dakota chipped in six reports around Faith, Buffalo, and Union Center with an inch of ice at Prairie City, and Kansas caught the tail at Belleville and Marysville near the Nebraska line.

Sandhills damage doesn't look like suburb damage and it doesn't get inspected like it either. Out there the wind reaches pole barns, machine sheds, grain setups, and pivots long before it gets to a house. Most of those roofs are metal panel, and metal fails differently than comp — 80 mph rarely tears a panel off outright. It works under an edge or a ridge cap, lifts one corner, and loosens every fastener down the seam. The building still sheds water afterward, which is exactly why nobody looks until a panel leaves in the next blow.

That 1.5-inch stone at Stapleton sits right at the threshold where composition shingles start shedding granules in earnest instead of just making noise. One report isn't a corridor, so nobody's going to come tell you about it — but if you're in Logan County, it's worth ten minutes and a ladder.

North Dakota's hardest gust, 76 mph at Casselton, sat off by itself out toward Fargo, and Oklahoma's panhandle logged a 75 at Hooker. Neither built into anything. For where the season's hail has actually piled up, the standings are on the Top States for Hail board. Scan the table below for your state and see what the 30th left near you.
